Donor Egg/Sperm Q&A

What is donor sperm?

Donor sperm is a healthy male zygote from an anonymous donor or from a volunteer that you know. There are several reasons to consider using donor sperm for pregnancy, including male infertility and genetic complications. In many cases, using donor sperm can significantly improve your chances of successfully getting pregnant.

During insemination with donor sperm, the Elite IVF team uses a syringe to inject the sperm sample into your uterus, where it can meet with healthy eggs. You can also use donor sperm for in vitro fertilization, during which the team mixes the sperm sample with several eggs to promote propagation in a lab setting.

What is a donor egg?

A donor egg is a female zygote, or egg, that comes from another woman’s ovary. It could be someone you know or an anonymous donor. Many medical conditions make it difficult or impossible for you to get pregnant using your own eggs. With a healthy egg from a donor, you may be able to improve your chances of getting pregnant significantly.

Your chances of success with a donor egg depend on many factors related to your health and the health of the donor. The only way for you to get pregnant using a donor egg is with in vitro fertilization, so the team mixes the donor eggs with the sperm sample in a lab to promote propagation.

Once the embryos are ready, the Elite IVF team places one or more of them in your uterus for implantation. Before the embryo enters your uterus, you must take progesterone for some time. The team performs a blood test 10 days after placing the embryos in your womb to determine if you’re pregnant.

When should I consider seeking a donor for sperm or eggs?

There are many cases in which you should consider sperm or egg donation to achieve a healthy, viable pregnancy. The Elite IVF team can answer all of your questions about using donor eggs or sperm and help you reach a decision. You might consider using donor eggs if you have:

  • Early menopause
  • A hormone imbalance
